108 Ramphocelus, Feb. 23, 1962, III the course of most mornings. Both B and C shut up a few minutes later. At 7:12, I came upon another juv. and/or female uttering TssN's and ФR's. Sometimes TssN - ФR - TssN - ФR ..... like the juv. and/or female observed yesterday. Each TssN-ФR pattern of this bird, and the bird observed yesterday, differed from a typical Ф in that there was a definite pause between each TssN and the succeeding ФR. The juv and/or female observed today also uttered a few hoarse "Tsaweeee"s (PN's?) and NN's after the TssN's and ФR's. At 7:50, I came across an adult male uttering TssN's and R's in much the same rhythm as the TssN's and ФR's of juvs and/or females. Preening between calls. These R's were hard & loud. Not "thin" like ФR's. This might suggest that ФR's are really a ritualized combination of R plus the then quality of TssN's. Ramphocelus, I February 24, 1962 Rio Piedras Arrive same area as yesterday 6:00 a.m. Everything silent. First Yellow-rump sounds heard 6:23. NN's. Then a brief series TssN's. Regular but slow rhythm. Then I hear C uttering TssN's and Ф's 6:25 a.m. C uttering Ф's from low perch 6:45. Wings quite drooped. Yellow-back very fluffed in definite ritualized Back R. Then see another male Yellow-rump. Alone. Uttering Ф's at very regular intervals. At first without Back R, with wings meeting over back.
