Ramphocelus, Mar. 4, 1962, II

steadily. Presumably an adult female & young of last year. Quite reminiscent of PCT family I watched last year.

Male is joined by female or juv. Female or juv. utters accelerated ФR as "greeting." Male just looks. Continues uttering Ф's. Not very prolonged or high intensity. Female or juv. flies away 6:45 a.m. Male eventually does so too. Disappears.

All quiet now 6:50 a.m. Male C sitting quietly on distant perch. No [[regri?]] of females or juvs.

Now I think all 3 birds low in shrubbery. Invisible.

Male up in tree, uttering occas. Ф's, TssN's, & NN's. Female appears below him. Male utters a long Ф. Nothing more. Female flies away. 7:07.

7:25 a.m. C male and 2 females or juvs. associating very closely now. Feeding. Also relatively long periods of sitting with or without preening. Male does very soft accelerated, prolonged ФR's whenever he approaches or is approached by one (or both?) of the females or juvs. Apparently no cop. attempts. Females or juvs. usually very fluffed in a sort of semi-H, when just sitting, but this may be nothing more than an int. mov. of preening. They may also utter soft ФR's when close to the male, but I am not sure about this.

These prolonged & accelerated ФR's by the male are so soft that they might be considered "Muffled" ФR's.

Still no trace of n.b. this morning. Why? Am I too close to the pot. nest site???

I forgot to mention that the "Muffled" ФR's of the C male described above were accompanied by very extreme Back R and Wing droops (but no TU or anything else).

8:15 a.m. Long territorial dispute between 2 male Yellow-rumps.
