115 Ramphocelus, Mar. 4, 1962, III [[image B - sketch of bird]] B - Not quite sure of head shapes Tail may sometimes be higher [[image A - sketch of bird]] A - Tail is not always so low (Not B or C - in very distinct area.) One male repeatedly supplants the other. The aggressive male utters long soft accelerated ФR's, one right after the other, before attacks. Usually while standing in a "Low" Posture like one of the postures drawn above. Usually like posture A. Sometimes like posture B. (The tail raising in posture B is probably not a ritualized display per se. Probably eventually a balancing reaction.) The retreating male did not display. The birds engaged in this dispute were in dry-looking scrub on the top of a hill approximately 150-200 ft high. A considerable distance from water. There were quite a lot of Yellow-rumps in this area. Ramphocelus, I March 5, 1962 Riio Piedras Starting observations C area 6:30 a.m. Can hear TssN's.
