Ramphocelus, Mar. 11, 1962, I 120 are definitely buzzier than those of the male. Ramphocelus, I March 13, 1962 Rio Piedras Start observing C Yellow-rump area 6:25 a.m. Male uttering Ф's. Then flies away. 6:35 a.m. 2 females or juvs sitting quite peacefully a few feet from where C male uttering low intensity Ф's. 6:36. A rapid incident which I don't see well. Male C approaches a female or juv. Uttering ФR's. Female or juv. moves away. Male turns away. Does 4 or 5 silent BW's. Female or juv. disappears. Male then begins to utter series of TssN's. Usual posture. Then flies away. This incident was obviously sexual. Presumably low intensity and/or frustrated. Male back almost immed. Flying from tree to tree (station to station. Uttering Ф's and/or ФR's each station. Obviously "patrolling" Quite ignores 2 female's or juvs. sitting placidly in center of his territory. All his Ф's and ФR's are accompanied by Wing droop and extreme Back R. 7:00 a.m. Male C flies from tree to tree, following or chasing (the) 2 females or juvs. With Ф's or ФR's. Then perches a few ft away from where the females or juvs are feeding. Utters ФR after ФR all with wing droop and Back R. There are definitely still 3 females or juvs in C area. 2 sticking together. One a little apart. The "territory" of this C male (the area over which he utters Ф's) is remarkably extensive - at least 50 ft long).
