Ramphocelus, Mar. 15, 1962, II 122

These "Klioo"s are quite reminiscent of the DCing of other species. But probably identical with soft-type PN's I have heard before (This is definitely not a male I have watched before. The other bird I heard uttering soft PN's is 1/4 mile from here, across the river.)

Ramphocelus, I
March 17, 1962
Rio Piedras

6:10 a.m. Hear what seems to be a Yellow-rump, without actually seeing it. "Dawn Calling". Uttering "Keeyoo keeyoo keeyoo keeyaa, keeyoo......" Interrupted by occasional Ф's (brief, with almost no R) NN's (usually in doublets), and at least one hoarse, wiry PN.

This only lasts few seconds. Bird disappears.

Back 6:15. Dawn Calling as before. This time I see it. Definitely a male Yellow-rump. Perched exposed. About 20 ft above ground. In usual TssN Posture.

The brief Ф's this bird utters might be transcribed as "Tsee-yoo" and "Tseee-yoo." Really nothing more than a TssN followed by a slightly modified terminal "yah." Wiry like all TssN's and Ф's.

The "Keeyoo" notes are obviously closely related to the brief Ф's. But softer, not wiry. Possibly not distinguishable from the notes I called "soft PN's" when I heard them uttered, more or less singly, by other birds later in the day.

Again, this bird continues Dawn Calling for only a few seconds before disappearing.

7:05 a.m. Watching different birds. Male Hopping excitedly
