Ramphocelus, Mar. 17, 1962, II 123 back and forth around feeding female. He is in extreme Back R, with extreme wing-droop. Uttering lots of soft accelerated ΦR's. Female ignoring him. I notice that male has fairly general erection of head feathers, chin feathers raised particularly conspicuously. Chin looks very swollen. Almost Thflff!! Aside from these components, the males postures unritualized. Back R etc. superimposed upon all sorts of unritualized sitting & pre-flight postures. Then another male appears, lands near female!!! First male retreats a little. Second male first facing female, facing away from first male. Second male in extreme Back R with extreme wing-droop, general erection of head feathers. And with tail spread to fullest extent and slightly raised!! Very conspicuous. Couldn't get good view of posture, but I don't think head was pointed downward as in low postures of disputing males I saw a week or so ago. Then second male lowers tail a little, hops away from female, sits in posture comme ca for a few seconds. [[image]] Tail still spread Semi-H Tail lowered more (again) after a few seconds in this posture. Then second male flies away. First male and female also fly, probably in different directions. I think the second male was silent throughout the whole performance.
