Ramphocelus, Mar. 18, 1962, I

"Tsee-yoo kioo tseeyoo kioo tseeyoo kioo...." Then starts to interject occasional NN's and complete Ф's. Then flies away.

Back again almost immed. Uttering more Ф's without ФR. Then flies off again. Back again. Uttering complete Ф's. Then off again 6:25 a.m.

Probably same 2 males seen yesterday feeding in same tree. One utters soft accelerated ФR's & Ф's. Other does Back R and wing droop without call. Then former flies away 6:45.

I have had a captive pair of Yellow-rumps for a long time now. Not doing anything. So I separated the male and female about 3 weeks ago. Each in an outside cage by itself. About 10 ft apart. Well within sight and sound of one another.

I went down this morning to see if the male was Dawn Calling. He reacted to my approach by uttering NN's. Then, when I moved back a few feet began to utter loud hoarse PN's, "Tseeyoo" or "Peeyoo" with an occasional NN interjected at random. Then, when I moved further away, he fell quite silent.

This would suggest that PN's may be at least partly hostile!!!
