Ramphocelus, Mar. 26, 1962, II

down onto her back. By the time he lands she is in soliciting posture. BU & TU. (Can't tell about wings). Cop. apparently successful. During latter part of cop. (at least) female has wings stretched out horizontally. Cop. brief. Male flies away after dismounting. Female remains in extreme BU & TU after he dismounts. Wings still out. Then Q's wings 2 or 3 times, in spasmodic bursts, while they are still out horizontally. Then relaxes.

As far as I could tell, both birds were silent throughout the cop.

The female probably had some degree of belly-fluffing or ruffling in her soliciting posture, but I couldn't see it well.

Cop. occurred in Cecropia, approximately 20 ft, above ground.

The male had been Dawn Calling before the cop,, but not immediately before.

Several males uttering Ф's with ФR now, 6:30, instead of Dawn Caling. Also a few TssN's.

A single TssN might be transcribed as "Tzzheet."

I think the male who copulated this morning was the male that began Dawn Calling earliest this morning.

6:40 Male A flying about his territory. Apparently excited by presence of one particular juv. or female. Possibly intruder. (He is quite ignoring another female or juv. in his territory). A is uttering lots of Ф's with ФR and TssN's. This may be another indication that TssN's are partly hostile???

I shall call the male who copulated this morning "D."

In spite of the fact that males of this species often seem to be crowded together cheek by jowl, their territories may extend for considerable distances
