Ramphocelus, I

March 27, 1962
Rio Piedras

Arrive D area, 5:55 a.m. Still quite dark. Yellow-rumps silent.

One Yellow-rump begins DC 6:00 a.m. D begins 6:02. A begins a moment later. Still well before sunrise. DC all birds almost pure "Kheezoo" Notes. A few NN's and/or soft PN's.

D uttering DC in same posture as that of A drawn a couple days ago. Looking vigorously from side to side. No trace of special wing or tail movements. In tree where cop occurred yesterday 6:06 flies from branch to branch in tree, uttering DC each branch. Then disappears!! Feeding? 6:09. Then DC briefly in another tree. Then disappears again. Then back DCing old tree 6:12. DCing accompanied by very slight Wing-droop, lots of flight int. [[mobs?]], including WF's. Then disappears again.

Now quite light 6:13 a.m. Still no trace of ♀'s.

D still gone 6:15.

This species seems to DC less steadily than any other species I know.

Now 2 ♀'s or juvs feeding in tree where cop occurred 6:17. D ♂ probably there also. All silent.

All birds stopped DCing 6:18 am.

♂ D just sitting silently in cop. tree. With definite Back R, slight wing-droop. Then supplanted by Nutro! Another indication that silent Back R contains appreciable escape? (D was facing away from Nutro most of the time he was in Back R.)

Transcription Notes:
I think that questionable word might be "mobs" because the "m" in "movements" looks very similar. The "b" is very short, but looks like the "b" in "begins". Not sure "int." is correct, though.
