(?) major (underlined)I 5

                             March 1, 1960
                            Barro Colorado

All the chicks are still alive (although they seem to be losing weight - see David's notes). M and Hrr are nice and active. Hlet (?) seems very weakly - doesn't want to do anything.
Hlet (?) still utters lots and lots of DN's, like last night, but M and Hrr have completely stopped DN's under "normal" conditions. We can only provoke DN's from these 2 latter chicks by manhandling them rather vigorously or putting one completely by itself in the hall.
Under such circumstances Hrr may utter a few single DN's, and a very few doublets, while M may utter a few single notes, a very few doubles, and at least once I heard it utter a triplet. (M didn't utter any sounds at all when "(?)" until I called to it.) The few DN's uttered by both M and Hrr are hoarser and lower-pitched than the ones they uttered when DN's were at their peak of frequency, so (?) & hoarseness may be (?) more than an indication of low intensity.
The above notes were written in the morning, around 9:00 a.m. By 7:00 o'clock this evening, when I returned from town, a lot of changes had occurred. Hbt dead but M & Hrr have gained weight.
By this evening, M had apparently stopped uttering DN's completely. Completely silent when handled. When isolated, silent most of the time, but occasionally uttered new notes, which may be called "Last Notes" ("LN"s). Rather high pitched, "quavering" or "warbling" whistles. Variable in pitch, although we haven't been able to get these variations analyzed yet. Usually (?) doublets [there are 2 lines here] or possibly[squiggly lines here]
Occasionally single notes. Probably uttered with
