Mixed Diglossini, July 23, 1965, IV.

(Frailejón) Páramo

Everything dead quiet 8:55 a.m.

See a single Maroon-crested montane cotinga alone. 10 ft up in top tree. Silent.

[[margin]] Gloriss [[/margin]] NOTE: I am not sure that there were ever more than 2 Gloriss's singing here. And they seem to have relatively large terretories. I.E. the population probably is small.

Going down hill now, to see if we can approach Gloriss area from another direction.

Making loop, come to sheltered side Gloriss area 9:10. Some single Sooty Thrushes around; but that, apparently, is all.

[[margin]] Brun? [[/margin]] Go on a little farther. Black Diglossa flies overhead into bush right at edge of Páramo. Lands 1 ft up. [[underlined]] Apparently [[/underlined]] Goriss. But this individual certainly does have [[underlined]] extensive gray [[/underlined]] on sides.

[[margin]] Gloriss [[/margin]] Hear some more Gloriss songs in distance. Certainly [[underlined]] not [[/underlined]] same birds heard earlier. 9:22 a.m.

[[margin]] Brun [[/margin]] 9:35 a.m. 10,700 ft. [[underlined]] Hear and see Brun (definite). [[/underlined]] Singing. Edge alpine scrub and Páramo. Bird perched [[checkmark]] 15 ft up in small tree. Utters phrase after phrase, in unritualized diagonal posture. All phrases fast, rapid, "formless", and prolonged. So fast that they are almost trilling.
[[margin]] Gloriss Brun [[/margin]] But they also include [[underlined]] pure [[/underlined]] R's in terminal or sub-terminal position. (I definitely heard R's in both places). Then Brun shuts up. [[underlined]] Immediately [[/underlined]] Gloriss (several hundred yards away) begins to sing. No overlap. Gloriss continues for some seconds, then shuts up. Immediately, Brun begins to sing again. [[underlined]] Again no overlap. [[/underlined]] Then Brun shuts up. Then off. A few seconds later, I hear R-Zaza pattern same area.

[[margin]] Gloriss Brun [[/margin]] [[underlined]] So the Bruns and Gloriss's here certainly are not separated [[/underlined]]
