Mixed Diglossini, July 23, 1965, VII

Area unburnt alpine scrub. Quite like areas inhabited by Bruns.

Then see single Yellow-belly in the tree 10 ft up. Apparently alone. Silent. Apparently eating small yellowish white flowers

[[margin]] Gloriss [[/margin]] More Gloris Songs same neighborhood. NOD. Again. NOD. Again. NOD. [[underlined]] Still [[/underlined]] continuing 11:07 am. Still NOD.

[[margin]] Brun [[/margin]] 10,325 ft 11:15 am. Hear a couple of Brun Song phrases in distance. No other diglossine or Whitestart audible. Brun shuts up. About 1-2 minutes later, a Yellow face utters a phrase. No other Whitestart or diglossine audible at the time.

11:25 am. Just below 10,200 ft. Just inside "upper sub-tropical" forest. See single Yellow-belly 20 ft up in trees. Apparently alone

A few feet further on come across family Blue & Blacks [[checkmark Checkmark checkmark]]. Obviously same family seen earlier. Juv. still Begging. Family now 3 ft up in dense scrub.

Oho! 50 ft further down path, see [[underlined]] another [[/underlined]] pair Blue & Blacks [[checkmark checkmark]]. So the population here probably is quite dense.

I can't tell if any of these birds are reacting to one another or not.

[[margin]] Brun Cy [[/margin]] 12:25 pm. Ca. 9500 ft. See single Brun [[checkmark]] 4 ft up in bush, just under tree where last Cy seen yesterday afternoon. Further confirmation that the territories of these birds are at least partly overlapping!

Arrive back at Finca 12:45 pm.

[[margin]] Brun [[margin]] COMMENT: The higher altitude Bruns, above 10,000 ft, are behaving in much the same way that I would expect of [[underlined]] carbonaria [[/underlined]] s.l. Also occuring in environments that are typical for the species. But the lower altitude individuals are quite distinctive. I wonder how much contact there is between the low and high populations ??? Could
