Mixed Diglossini, July 24, 1965, II.

DWA") visible or audible at the time. Bird sings almost steadily now 6:11 a.m.

[[margin]] lafresnayei [[/margin]] This development would suggest that [[underlined]] lafresnayei [[/underlined]] s.l. tend to begin song relatively late, even when there are no [[underlined]] carbonaria [[/underlined]] s.l. within earshot to "pre-empt" the air waves at dawn!

Wind increasing now.

[[margin]] Gloriss [[/margin]] This Gloriss is singing in the area of quite thick and tall, and obviously unburned, alpine scrub. Still NODWA. Apparently only one Gloriss within earshot of me. And the phrases of this Gloriss song are [[underlined]] not [[/underlined]] as long, [[underlined]] on the average, [[/underlined]] as those of many other [[underlined]] lafresnayei [[/underlined]] s.l. individuals I have heard in other regions. Presumably this Gloriss is not being stimulated by rivals.

[[margin]] Gloriss [[/margin]] Gloriss silent 6:18 a.m. And now I hear what seems to be Atlapetes Whistle Songs nearby! Several Atlapetes singing in different areas. Shut up 6:26. [[underlined]] Immediately, [[/underlined]] there is a brief outburst Gloriss song! No overlaps. Then Atlapetes and Gloriss alternate phrases. Again no overlap. Gloriss continues. Atlapetes utters a couple of phrases. [[underlined]] Complete overlap. (But [[/underlined]] the 2 birds which are overlapping are [[underlined]] very [[/underlined]] far apart from one another.) Then Gloriss shuts up. Atlapetes continues. Atlapetes stops. Gloriss starts again. Shuts up. Atlapetes start again. No overlap. Shut up.

Incidentally, all the [[underlined]] Atlapetes [[/underlined]] songs heard this morning have been 2, 3, or 4 note Whistle Songs.

[[margin]] Gloriss [[/margin]] 6:35. Gloriss singing again. Distant Atlapetes utters many Whistle Songs while Gloriss is in full voice. Many (at least 6-8) complete overlaps. Then Gloriss shuts up. Atlapetes continues. Shuts up. Gloriss utters 1 brief phrase. No overlap. Shuts up. Atlapetes starts again.
