Mixed Diglossini, July 24, 1965, VI.

[[underlined]] lafresnayei [[/underlined]] s.l.)

[[margin]] Brun [[/margin]] 8:30 a.m. One Brun [[checkmark]] performance song flight over Páramo between the two patches of scrub.

[[margin]] Brun Scan [[/margin]] I am gradually coming to the conclusion that there are only 2 Bruns here, occupying both patches of scrub and flying over the intervening stretch of Páramo, if so, it can be said that the territory of the local Scan is at least partly overlapping with that (those) of one or both Bruns. (NOTE: Perhaps significantly, I have not heard or seen any Scan displays here. Perhaps the local Scans are not breeding now.)

Everything very quiet 8:50 a.m.

[[margin]] Brun Gloriss [[/margin]] Then Brun sings in first patch scrub. Shuts up. Then I hear Gloriss some distance away (to the [[underlined]] East [[/underlined]] – this may be a different bird from any I have heard before). Shuts up. Then Brun sings again. Shuts up. Then Gloriss sings again. Shuts up. [[underlined]] No overlap at any time. [[/underlined]]

So perhaps there [[underlined]] is [[/underlined]] mutual inhibition between Gloriss and Brun! At least, sound of Gloriss may inhibit Brun.

[[margin]] Brun [[/margin]] 9:00 a.m. One Brun chasing another, with [[checkmark checkmark]] R, in isolated patch scrub.

[[margin]] Brun [[/margin]] It seems to me that these Bruns are uttering [[underlined]] comparatively very many [[/underlined]] R's without Za-za. Also quite a number of R's with only a brief, single, "slurred" Za at the end. Was this characteristic of the Southern Bruns as well??? (To my recollection, it is not characteristic of Carbo, or even Ater or Humer.)

[[margin]] Brun [[/margin]] Pair of PL [[checkmark checkmark]] Atlapetes flies into isolated patch scrub. Alone. Uttering "feeet" notes. Apparently ignored by Bruns – although I can hear the Bruns uttering R patterns not far away. Bruns also seem to ignore a pair of [[underlined]] [[?Oecthua]] [[/underlined]] nearby.
