Mixed Diglossini, May 9, 1965, IV (7)

^[[Cinn Cy Laf Cy 116]] are particularly like to show overt hostility toward Cys when the latter are singing. Because they are more conspicuous there?). Both Cy and Laf continue Singing with complete overlaps. Then a pair of [[underlined]] Whitestarts [[/underlined]] ^[[2 checkmarks]], about 30-40 ft from Cy, and twice the distance from Laf, [[underlined]] also begin to Sing. Complete, repeated overlaps all 3 species. [[/underlined]] Then, eventually, both Cy and Laf shut up. Whitestarts utter a few more phrases. Then shut up too.

All this quite reminiscent Eastern Cordillera!

Incidentally, the Whitestarts were quite alone at the time.

Hear [[Dubima?]] in distance 7:50.

^[[Cy Cinn VIII]] One aspect of Cy behavior here is most interesting and unexpected. I have repeatedly seen individuals in the bushes with dark red cup-shaped flowers These are the flowers which the Cys in the Eastern Cordillera liked so much. But I have yet to see a Cy here feed on one! These flowers seem to have been appropriated by the hummingbirds here (especially VII and VIII).

^[[Cy Laf]] During next few minutes, hear quite a lot more Cy and Laf phrases. Not overlapping. But then, 7:58, there is another complete overlap. Cy begins to Sing after Laf has started.

^[[118 Laf Ater?]] Oh God! 8:01 am. See one Black ^[[two checkmarks]] Diglossa repeatedly attack, chase, and supplant another. Some distance away, downhill. In region relatively tall & dense scrub The attacker is certainly a Laf. But the attacked does [[underlined]] not [[/underlined]] have visible humeral patches; [[underlined]] and [[/underlined]] appears to be relatively small. [[underlined]] Presumably Ater [[/underlined]]! All [[underlined]] very [[/underlined]] Eastern Cordillera-like!

Go on up hill. Lafs singing various places 8:30 am Then shut up

^[[Cy]] Going down hill 8:50. Hear some more Cy Songs as before. No other diglossine audible. Cy shuts up. Whitestart Sings. Shuts up

^[[Cy 119]] See single Cy ^[[checkmark]] alone. Apparently juv. seen yesterday. Feeding clusters small
