Mixed Diglossini, May 18, 1965, IV (47)

^[[Ater Scan]] 4 or 5 Song phrases. All phrases rapid twitters, [[underlined]] definitely [[/underlined]] without R. Then the bird flies away into low scrub. There were no Scans audible during the period Ater Sang. [[underlined]] Altho [[/underlined]] Scan(s) vocalized immediately before and after! (Scan vocalizations both cases long indeterminate series harsh "chuk" or "chup" Notes.) Was this just coincidence???

^[[Ater Scan]] 8:38. Again Ater back usual place. Uttering Songs without R's. NOD. Again, Scans are silent at the time! But Songs of Ater [[underlined]] do [[/underlined]] overlap one brief Whitestart phrase in distance.

Ater shuts up. A few seconds later, hear Scan "twitter". (These "twitters" are the rapid series of notes which Scans seem to give in air when chasing one another.) Scan sounds coming from area far away from Singing Ater. Then I hear brief series harsh "chuk" Notes. (These series may be the Scan equivalent of territorial "Song".) Then everything is silent for a while.

^[[Ater Scan]] Then Ater Sings a couple of phrases. Stops. [[underlined]] Immediately [[/underlined]] a nearby Scan utters a few "Song" "chuk" Notes. Stops. [[underlined]] Immediately [[/underlined]] Ater utters a few more phrases. Stops. [[underlined]] Immediately [[/underlined]] Scan utters more "chuk"s. Stops. [[underlined]] Immediately [[/underlined]] Ater Sings again. Stops. General quiet.

So it [[underlined]] does [[/underlined]] look as if mutual inhibition Song is effective in the Scan-Ater relationship!!!!!!

8:45. Ater Sings a few more phrases. NOD. [[underlined]] And [[/underlined]] no Scan audible at the time! But Ater Song does overlap Catamenia Song in distance.

It looks as if this may be (another) area where Scan is a full fledged member of the Diglossine social complex.

^[[Ater Scan]] Now one or more Aters are uttering "chuk"s in distance. Ater Sings nearby. [[underlined]] This [[/underlined]] time, there seems to be [[underlined]] complete overlap [[/underlined]]!

^[[Ater 209]] 8:52. Another area a little further along road. See ^[[checkmark]] another Ater
