Mixed Diglossini, Apr. 13, 1965, VII

calization(s) - probably SHN's - but I was too far away to hear it (them). Twice, during this performance, one of the birds leaned down and pecked and pulled at spanish moss. Then continued Bowing as before with one or two strands of moss in bill. Even of gran-pulling in the Herring Gull! Definitely reduction. Eventually one of the birds flies off. When the other relaxes.

This was almost certainly a high intensity dispute.

COMMENT: I think that it may be probable to make schematic outline of the sequence of events when a new region is opened to colonisation by Diglossini.

Stage I, A large number of species move in. Broad ecological and geographical overlap between species. The different species do not talie very elaborate precautions to avoid personal contactwith one another. Sometimes come together in a non-hostile way. At other times dispute among themselves. This seems to be the stage in Merida now.

Stage II. The species become more divergent ecologically but retain geographical overlap. Possibly there is a tendency to eliminate one or more species. The different species begin to take pains to avoid personal contact. But their methods are not foolproof. Different species still come close together occasionally. But overt water-specific fighting, at least, is stopped. This seems to be the stage reached at Prio de Espejo, Paramo La Negra, and to the eastern Cordillera of Columbia.
