Mixed Diglossini, Sept. 30, 1962, II

[] Laf 32 [[both red]] []
Lafs do not seem to be stimulated to sing by the sound of the PR Atlapetes ✓✓32 song. Nor do they seem to be prevented from singing by this sound. But the PR Atlapetes itself is frequently stimulated to sing by the sound of Raf song!

[] Laf 34 [[both red]] []
7:10 am. Long sustained boundary dispute between 2 Lafs ✓✓34. Lots of rapid chasing, twisting and turning thru scrub. Brief pauses between chases, when birds perched only a few feet apart. All this accompanied by nearly constant singing. Certainly by pursuer. Probably also by pursued. Song sometimes reduced to rather spasmodic "Zeezee zeezee zeezee...." I.E. doublet structure is more prominent than usual when songs are particularly hostile - even in the case of this species. As far as I could tell, there were no special postures or movements during this dispute.

[] Laf [[red]] 35 []
One of the birds uttered a brief series of "Tuck"s once during a chase thru scrub.

A third bird, presumably mate ✓35 of pursuer, followed along some distance behind the disputants.

[] Laf [[red]] []
All 3 birds uttered "Seeet"s in flight when they had to cross road. An indication that these notes are purely FCN's. They were not uttered at any other time during the dispute.

After about 5 minutes, the disputants separated. Then each sang typical songs on exposed perches in their own territories.

[] Laf [[red]] []
Lafs seem to utter loud "Tuck"s very frequently whenever they see me. This may be a good feature to use in specific identification

[] II HO [[purple]] Laf [[red]] Ruf [[red]] Sitti [[red]] []
7:35 Come across large mixed flock. In exactly same place as yesterday. Obviously largely same flock.

[] 3 6 [[both green]] []
When I first came across the flock, there was a Laf ✓1 [[check green, # purple]] singing top small tree a few feet behind rest of birds. About 6-15 ft from him were a pair of Rufs ✓✓2 [[2 check green, purple #]] and a single C.s. ✓3 [[green check, purple #]] sitticolor ("Sitti"). Feeding on insects in bushes (same bushes where Ruf and Laf fed yesterday). Sitti at times no more than a few feet (if that) from one or both Rufs. Both Rufs and Sitti either silent or uttering nothing more than "CN"s. As far as I could see, there were no overt reactions between Rufs and Sitti.

NOTE: because of the different colored checks and numbers below, I specified the different colors because they must mean something.
