Mixed Diglossini, Apr. 23, 1965, III

Everything quite quiet now 6:07

[[margin]] Cy [[/margin]]
Then a few more Cy phrases. There are certainly at least 2 Cys here, but I still think that only one is singing.

[[margin]] 60 IX HO [[/margin]]
6:12 am. Mixed flock appears Laf √(1) - Cy √ (2) area. Includes at least 1√(3) or 2√ PL Atlapetes, 1√ (4) Firebelly, 1√ (5) Blue & Orange. PL definitely in lead. One PL uttering lots of Whistle Songs (3 note phrases). Rest of group silent. All low in thick scrub.

[[margin]] Cy [[/margin]]
Appearance of flock stimulates outburst song by Cy. For a minute or so Cy alternates song phrases with Whistle songs PL. No overlap.
[[margin]] Laf Cy [[/margin]]
Then Laf also begins to sing. Complete overlap Cy and Laf Songs. (By this time PL has moved on a little. I am not sure if the outburst "joint" Diglossine songs overlapped PL songs or not.)
[[margin]] Laf Cy [[/margin]]
Then Laf supplants Cy (definite). At least once. (Actually, I think it happened three times in as many minutes.) Interspersed with more overlapping songs by both species.

Flock moves on rapidly.

[[margin]] Cy 178 Laf [[/margin]]
6:18. Cy √ singing alone. Shuts up. Laf √ sings. This seems to stimulate Cy to sing again. Complete overlap. Laf shuts up. Cy continues singing. Cy shuts up. And immediately PL (apparently) still nearby) begins Whistle Songs. Shuts up.
[[margin]] Cy [[/margin]]
Cy sings one phrase. Shuts up. Immediately PL begins Whistle songs again!

[[margin]] Cy [[/margin]]
I.E, mutual song inhibition seems to exist between Cy and PL. Remarkable, as Whistle Songs PL so very undiglossine.

Whole mixed flock seems to be coming back this way. Hear Firebelly nearby 6:28

[[margin]] Cy [[/margin]]
Both Cy and PL still singing occasionally without overlaps. Then PL continues alone.

Transcription Notes:
put the purple marginal text with the second paragraph because of the arrows. Indicated circled superscript numbers by checkmarks with parentheses intralinearly. not sure if this is the best approach.
