Mixed Diglossini, Apr. 4, 1963, III [[circled]] 19 [[/circled]]

where I worked this morning. Much of these areas looked very suitable for the Cys observed in other regions

[[margin]] CC [[/margin]] As far as I could tell, there were no CC's in the areas visited this morning. (Although it is possible that I overlooked a few individuals, as there were lots of small gray finches, ie. [[underlined]] C. homochroa [[/underlined]] and [[underlined]] P. plebegus [[underlined]], around almost everywhere.) [[margin]] CC [[/margin]] CC's probably prefer drier areas on the whole (but the area where a CC was seen yesterday afternoon was almost as dry as the areas visited today)

[[margin]] Pect [[/margin]] I am certain that there were no [[underlined]] pectoralis [[/underlined]] around anywhere I worked this morning. I only got to [[green pencil]] 9000-9100 [[/green pencil]] near the ravine; but I could hear birds 50-100 ft further up without difficulty. And none of them uttered anything like the songs of Laf - or like any other diglossine [[margin]] Brun [[/margin]] vocalizations (apart from Brun songs) So if [[underlined]] pectoralis [[/underlined]] occurs on this mountain, it must be considerably higher up.

[[margin]] Gen [[/margin]] All these facts would seem to confirm the suggestion that there is less ecological and/or geographical overlap among the diglossines of Peru than among the diglossines of more southern regions

NOTE: Altitudes marked in green [[green wavy line]] are [[underlined]] very [[/underlined]] tentative. My altimeter went on the blink yesterday evening.

[[margin]] Brun [[/margin]] This afternoon going down to area where saw Thly yesterday. 8100-8200. Arrive 3:45 pm. Can hear Bruns in distance.

[[underlined]] Brun [[/underlined]] Finally see my first Brun 4:05. In fairly dry area. Just flies by silently. The another. Feeding on clusters of small white buttercup-shaped flowers

This area is quite near the bottom of the ravine where I worked this morning

[[margin]] Brun [[/margin]] See another single individual. Not feeding.

It has just occurred to me that I have yet to see an unmistakable

Retain marking for 'green pencil' for some altitudes
