Mixed Diglossini, Apr. 8, 1963, II. [[circled]] 43 [[/circled]]

[[margin]] Brun [[/margin]] Bruns singing here now are singing because of "thwarted pairing drive.")

[[margin]] Brun [[/margin]] Arrive area where I thought I heard second Pect day before yesterday. 6:31 am. All I can hear is Bruns now.

[[margin]] Pect Brun [[/margin]] 6:41 am. Arrive A Pect area. Can hear both Brun & Pect singing. Pect seems to be way down hill. Then only Bruns sing.

[[margin]] Brun [[/margin]] Pair of Bruns moving around, uphill, in edge of what used to be A Pect territory. One sings occasionally.

[[margin]] Pect [[/margin]] Again Pect sings down hill.

Then general silence 6:46.

[[margin]] Pect Brun [[/margin]] Then Pect moves somewhat uphill to what was its favorite song perch day before yesterday (see map), still below Bruns. Sings long indeterminate phrase, largely doublets. Looking from side to side during song. One Brun utters 2 brief ordinary phrases while Pect continues. Then Pect falls silent. Then Pect moves up hill. Sings from top most part of his territory. Again stimulates Brun to utter 2 song phrases while own song continues. Then falls silent. Then Brun sings alone. Stimulates Pect to start again. Again Brun sings a couple of phrases while Pect continues. Pect shuts up. Then starts again. Stimulating Brun to sing again. Pect continues alone.

[[margin]] Pect Brun [[/margin]] Then Pect comes over to Brun territory and supplants Brun. Silent. No chase. Pect goes back to own territory.

Very cold and clear here today. Little wind.

[[margin]] Pect [[/margin]] 6:58. Pect sings way up hill, well above road. Seems to have extended its territory since day before yesterday!!

Again looked from side to side throughout song. This almost seems to be ritualized. Although it is not always present.

[[margin]] Pect Brun [[/margin]] Then feeds on white flowers in Brun territory. No Brun response.
