Mixed Diglossini, Apr. 8, 1963, IV. [[circled]] 45 [[/circled]]

[[margin]] Pect Brun [[/margin]] Then a Pect reappears, chases Brun, silently, well into Brun territory. Then flies back to own territory. Feeds on white flowers, while Brun begins to sing. Then Brun shuts up. Pect flies further down hill Perches. Begins to sing. Looking from side to side again. Brun finally begins to sing again after Pect has sung for a relatively long time. Then both shut up.

[[margin]] Pect [[/margin]] The looking from side to side during singing by Pect may have been selected for simply because it is [[underlined]] visually extremely conspicuous [[/underlined]] (due to swiveling of malar stripes above bib)

[[margin]] Pect Brun [[/margin]] Everything generally quiet again. Pects gone down hill. Bruns moving about territory peacefully. Occasional brief twitters and R-Zaza's. See one Brun visit [[underlined]] exactly the same [[/underlined]] white flowers visited by Pect earlier this morning.

[[margin]] Pect Brun [[/margin]] Then Pect up to favorite song perch again. Sings. With side to side head movements ("SS") as usual. Stimulates a burst of twitter song phrases by one of the Bruns. Then Pect shuts up. Brun continues phrases. Then Pect begins again (in silent interval between Brun phrases). Brun utters more phrases while Pect continues. Then whole process repeated again. Again. Brun certainly sings more frequently during general periods when Pect is singing than when the latter is silent.

[[margin]] Pect Brun [[/margin]] Then Pect goes down hill again. Falls silent. Pect certainly sings less frequently down hill, when far away from these Bruns, than when up hill.

IE. a large proportion of the songs of both species are inter-specific reactions.

[[margin]] Cy [[/margin]] No trace Cy here today. I E the Cy here the first day was probably a stray, like the [[underlined]] indigotica [[/underlined]] on Atacaso
