Mixed Diglossini
Apr. 10, 1963
Nr Cuzco

This afternoon working from Cuzco to the Urubamba Valley at [[Pisuc?]] and then down valley. Starting out 2:30 pm. Have stopped at several places along the way that have looked as if they should be suitable for Bruns and CC's — without hearing or seeing a single diglossine so far! 3:55 pm

Probably not coincidental that I haven't seen any tubular red flowers either! [[underlined]] No hummingbirds either [[/underlined]]!

4:35 pm. Come across some white tubular flowers. Apparently the same species as the ones favored by the Pects nr Tarma. One hummingbird in neighborhood, but no diglossini. [[written in green]] 9500 [[/written in green]] Quite a lot of these trees with white flowers, in fact!

[[margin]] Scan? [[/margin]] Same species green hummer with purple cheek stripe around!

Finally come across some tubular red flowers, going uphill same area in damp ravine. Definitely have holes in corollas; but can't see birds that made the holes [[written in green]] 9550 [[/written in green]]

Come across another patch same red flowers slightly further down Again with holes. Again can't see birds

Go on down to [[written in green]] 9400 [[/written in green]], still without seeing or hearing any diglossines!

[[margin]] Gen [[/margin]] The apparent absence of all or most [[underlined]] Diglossa [[/underlined]] (s.s.) species in this region may be real. Presumably due to the comparative (although not actual) aridity of the region and the rarity of suitable food flowers. (I might mention that my driver said that the rainy season is just over Unlike Tarma where it seemed to be still in process of ending.)
