Mixed Diglossini, Oct. 20, 1963, II
[[circled]] 13 [[/circled]]

[[female symbol]] back building, 6:30 am. Still 6:40 [[male symbol]] comes down to perch on hedge once, but nothing happens.

[[margin]] Carbo [[/margin]] 6:45 am. [[female symbol]] collecting n.m. as usual. Starts to fly back to nest site. [[male symbol]] (from tree) suddenly swoops down & pounces on her. Brief aerial chase. Accompanied by soft R. I don't know whether one or both birds landed in grass or not Even if so, they were not down long enough to copulate. [[male symbol]] immediately flies up to perch dead bush 6 ft above ground. Sits in semi diagonal posture; apparently unritualized, but with whole breast & belly unusually fluffed. Silent. Then flies up to Eucalypt. Sits in normal posture. [[female symbol]] meanwhile has disappeared. But comes back to build almost immediately

The [[female symbol]] was very close to me just before this incident. She certainly did [[underlined]] nothin [[/underlined]] to invite the pounce

[[margin]] Carbo [[/margin]] A minute later, [[female symbol]] is in hedge when [[male symbol]] pounces on her again. R-Zaza by 1 or both birds. [[female symbol]] flies away to nearby tree immediately. Utters long loud R in flight ([[underlined]] no [[/underlined]] Zaza), and I can see that she has her belly [[underlined]] unusually fluffed in flight. [[/underlined]] [[male symbol]] flies of to an Eucalypt in opposite direction.

[[female symbol]] back building 6:54

7:02. The [[female symbol]] suddenly gets involved in a terrific fight with a House Wren (whom both Carbos have ignored up to now). Don't know how fight started ([[female symbol]] was collecting at the time). Fight involves lots of aerial chasing and, I think, actual pecking. The Carbo chasing the Wren. Then the [[male symbol]] Carbo joins the chase Several R-Zaza patterns. Wren disappears. Both Carbos back to previous behavior

7:07 [[female symbol]] down on ground collecting [[male symbol]] swoops down on her from Eucalypt [[female symbol]] flies away before he gets to her. [[male symbol]] chases her.
