Mixed Diglossini, Oct. 26, 1963, III [[circled]] 27 [[/circled]]

[[left margin]] Cy [[/left margin]] As far as I could tell, the probable territory of the Cy is quite large. Larger than all or most Brun territories in this region.

[[left margin]] Brun [[/left margin]] 8:00 am. See that one of the Bruns [[3 check marks over Bruns]] by the road has quite conspicuous gray supra-ciliary stripes.

[[left margin]] Brun [[/left margin]] This bird flies down and lands in a bush a few inches away from another Brun. Its mate? (Now I see that the second bird also has gray supra-ciliary stripes!) One or both bird(s) utter(s) "Greeting", i.e. a phrase intermediate between typical twitter and typical R followed, immediately, by "Za za". The approached bird just looks at the approacher for a few seconds. Then it appears to do a very brief and slight TV, with wings folded on the back. (This movement was so slight and rapid that I am not sure that it was actually ritualized.) The approacher flies away immediately. The approached flies away in the opposite direction a second or so later.

[[left margin]] Brun Carbo [[/left margin]] Are these gray supra-ciliary streaks characteristic of the whole population of Bruns around here? Are they another character adopted to maintain separation from Carbo????
