May 8, III

The usual Long Call that sounds like the Landing Call is sometimes, at least, given during a down glide — and even glides that do not result in alighting and during which the head and neck are not bent down.

Is there an aerial call, or Long Call, just made up of a series of squeals, appr. same pitch and length. I think so.

Sunday May 9

Gulls on colony! About 11:00-11:30 a.m., at least

Some landing and M.C's on vegetation and/or ice

Lots of aerial. Most circling. Some descending glides (with Landing call) Some pursuits, but not conspicuous. A few weak swoops, and a few, more conspicuous, soars. Hard to tell significance or degree of ritualization. The "aerial moaning note" is apparently the attack call.

Also lots of gulls flying around the ridge this afternoon. Some calling, glides — but can't say much about them.
