Arrive small island colony 4:50a.m. Cloudy. Raining. Moderate T°, wind intermittent.

4:55 a.m. Change A nest near B. B back immed. A seems alarmed.

Then settle. No reaction of any sort. B sits placidly. A upset, in that she is obviously uncomfortable (displ. acts, going back & forth between old site and present nest, etc.) but on the whole she is surprisingly calm. NR at A 5:23 Female flies off. Male settles happily. Not a peep from B.

Is this lack of reaction due to weather?

5:47. Try again, same birds. Move A nest much closer to B. B back immed. Standing alarmed. A not back so soon. Then lands at old site. Looks puzzled. Then starts displacing. Shows no interest in moved nest.

Then A to nest.

B: AC AC AC AC (almost constant steady stream) A retreats back to old site, preens. Back to nest, B:AC. Retreats immed. A: O during retreat (in air) Back to old site, starts preening. B relaxes immediately A then starts nest-building then flies to nest B: AC A:O (in air). Then tries again, B:AC, A retreats immed. Tries again B:AC. All A's approaches are by flying-and so are all his retreats.
