The rabbit tally of the Han dynasty has two halves and used as pass to and from the imperial palaces. The presentee holds one half and the other half kept in possession of the palace keeper and when demanded, the tw o halves should be produced and to see if they correspond.

The whole body is wrapped in a coat of earth mould. There are inscribed on the back as well as on the neck Chinese characters. One half is missing. This rabbit tally was excavated from earth considerable time ago, hence the difficulty of tracing the other half.
