We arrived at An-yang on the 7th of October, 1928. On the next day, we succeeded in securing some rooms in the Chang-te High School in Huan-shang Ts'un to be used as our headquarter. At the time the Director of the School, Mr. Chao Chih-ch'en(趙質宸),was away in Shanghai on official duty. The dean of the school,Mr. Liang Ch'ao-tung(梁朝棟) received us most kindly and extended to the party every hospitability; the school also furnished many of the necessary supplies. It is a pleasant duty for me to acknowledge our gratitude to the authorities of the High School here.

Having arranged our lodging quarter, Mr. Kuo and I went to call on the magistrate; the [[underline]]yamen[[/underline]] is in Tung-men Ta-chieh, south of the Drum-tower; the magistrate, Ch'en Hsin(陳信), showed sympathetic attitude towards this undertaking; he complied with our requests promptly and accordingly:

1. By issuing a proclamation, explaining to the general public of this district, the origin, aim and the legal status of the excavation party. In Hsiao-t'un and its neighboring villages, each was given one of these written proclaimation.

2. By writing to the 'Peoples'Self Protecting Corps'(人民自衛團), asking for ten soldiers and one officer to station at Hsiao-t'un in order to protect the Excavation Party as well as look after the site in the digging season.

3. Instructing the Divisional Chief(區長) of the Northern Division to help and protect the members of the party.

4. Appointing a delegate from the [[underline]]yamen[[/underline]] to help making all the preliminary arrangements; the appointee was Chang Shou-k'ui
