By the end of February, 1929, everything was ready for the work of the season. On the third of March the whole party arrived at An-yang. In compliance with the request of Academia Sinica, the Provincial Government of Honan, generously consented to allot part of the building of Huan-shang Ts'un for the temporary use of the field party. The local Gentry, the garrison soldiers and all the parties that might feel concerned,were all, thanks to the patient effort of Mr. Tung Tso-ping, obliging to the [[strikethrough]]party[[/strikethrough]] ^[[expedition]]. The excavation successfully started on the seventh of March.

B. Trenchings.

In making plans for the work of the season, four general problems were considered as of fundamental importance: 1. the surface feature of the site and its relation to the surrounding topography; 2. the nature of the deposit; 3. the extension of the site; 4. the nature of the remains that may be definitely dated back to the Yin-shang period.

With these four fundamental problems in view, the excavation was carried on till May 7th, when a change of political and military situation in North China interrupted the work. When the party left Chang-te, the railway communication was already cut-off; they had to travel four stations on a hand car before getting any train service. The Chang-te bridge was bombed immediately following the crossing of it by the party.
