  What were these pits used for? This question obviously could not be snswered definitely till the completion of the analysis of the artifacts found from these pits. Two things however may be noted at present in regard to these various pits: (1) the artifacts are better preserved; (2) the stratifications are better preserved. J. G. Anderson in his excavations at Yang-shao has noted a number of pockets, which are 1.9-2.8 meters in diameter, circular in plan and 0.5-1.9 meters deep'(An Early Chinese Culture, P. 21). He proceeded to explain these pocket-like foundations as a kind of cellar pits(Kellergruben) similar to those from Neolithic sites of Achenheim and Stutzheim in Elass described by Forrer.
