5. Class IV.

The discovery of this class within the undisturbed Shang stratum in the fall of 1929 constitutes one of the greatest excitements of the season. The thin protective layer is of no doubt artificially originated, and it is probably one of the earliest attempts made in trying to produce glaze-effect. The experiment[[strikethrough]]s[[/strikethrough]] was not completely successful, as many of these were already worn away; but its high-temperature baking is already a distinguished feature by itself. The following rims and bottoms may be distinguished.
