As in our previous project, Doris Holmes Blake's prolific summer correspondence with her husband, Sidney, continues—this time over the second half of WWII. While their letters carry on as before, mostly full of small-town news, updates on family, friends, and coworkers, shopping trips and household chores, there are also glimpses of the realities of living through a world war. The scarcity of certain groceries and other commodities preoccupy Doris as she cans produce from their garden and visits a summer sale at Filene's; she comments on Mussolini's leadership as the war proceeds into Italy; but through it all, Doris remains focused on her work and interests while caring for those she loves—as well as fixates on her tomatoes back at home in Washington. Come join your fellow volunpeers and follow Doris and family as they weather the humid summers of New England and WWII comes to a close.
