Leonhard Stejneger - Vol. II, Bering Island, 1897

About the Project

Continuing his observations in this next field journal, Leonhard Stejneger, curator at the United States National Museum and presidential appointee to the International Fur-Seal Commission, documented the status of seals and other marine life in the North Pacific. These records would go on to inform international negotiations on how to protect the seals in the North Pacific from being harvested to extinction. Join with us in the transcription effort to make his handwritten field books more accessible to today's researchers.
