Edward Alphonso Goldman - Mexico, December 13, 1902 - July 5, 1903

About the Project

It's hard to imagine what it was like for Edward Goldman and other collecting scientists like him to travel. Now we are used to air travel, high-speed trains and personal motor vehicles—none of those were available at the time. And while you can theorize what it must have entailed to walk or ride almost everywhere, it's completely different to experience yourself. So much time and effort was needed for scientists like Goldman to collect, identify, and transport the specimens that now make up part of the Smithsonian's collections. Their contributions were invaluable—and yours will be too, along with your fellow volunpeers who help transcribe our field notebooks!
