Mel Casas papers: General Correspondence, 1985-1987

About the Project

Artist, educator and cultural organizer Mel Casas (1929-2014) was born in El Paso, Texas. Casas is a prominent figure for Chicano art history. In 1968, he helped co-found the Chicano artist collective, Con Safo, based in San Antonio, Texas. The collective included various artists over the years, including Felipe Reyes, José Esquivel, Rick Treviño, Carmen Lomas Garza, and César Martínez. The group sought to document and define the Chicano identity through their art. In 1971, Casas wrote the Brown Paper Report, which served as a manifesto for the artists’ generation and movement. His most noted series Humanscapes consists of 150 large-scale paintings that serve as commentary on cultural stereotypes. Help us in transcribing this collection and contribute to highlighting Chicano art history! Note: special instructions in the full project description.
