Have you ever wondered what college was like in the 1930s? Take a look at the photos and text in this 1937 Alabama State yearbook and help us transcribe the pages to find out.
In 1867, nine formerly enslaved men in Marion, Alabama, established the Lincoln Normal School at Marion. The Lincoln School opened on November 13, 1867, with 113 students and in 1873 became the nation’s first state-sponsored liberal arts institution for the higher education of African Americans. In 1874 the school was renamed the Alabama State Lincoln Normal School and University. The school moved to Montgomery, Alabama, in 1887, and today, continues to enroll students in more than 50 undergraduate and graduate programs.
