Proceedings of the Board of Regents Meeting, May 10, 1976

About the Project

The Smithsonian isn’t just one museum—it is nineteen museums, a national zoo, and nine research centers across the globe! In the United States, there are Smithsonian museums throughout Washington D.C., and in New York City—but, did you know that there were plans to expand to the West Coast? One of the topics that the Smithsonian’s Board of Regents discussed in May 1976 was creating a “Smithsonian West” in Sacramento, planned in conjunction with the State of California. What would this museum experience have been like? Learn more about the proposal in this set of meeting minutes, and help other digital volunteers to transcribe!
