Aug 7th 1860 [[strikethrough]] here & there [[/strikethrough ^[[insertion]] were [[/insertion]] here & there giving contrast mid the dark waters - the craggy rocks ^[[insertion]] were [[/insertion]] sharply cutting their ^[[insertion]] black [[/insertion]] profiles upon the distant sky. I thought: 'And will the civilized ^[[insertion]] world [[/insertion]] ever see these desperate men, again? If ^[[insertion]] 9 [[/insertion]] men ^[[insertion]] have [[/insertion]] [[strikethrough]] would [[/strikethrough]] undertaken such a journey - such a voyage, of near 2000 miles, with so little preparation, [[underlined]] what heart should I have to prosecute my [[strikethrough]] [[illegible]] [[/strikethrough]]undertakings!' [[strikethrough]] The men left [[/strikethrough]] At last they were lost to my view plying their oars as [[underlined]] manfully [[/underlined]] as when ^[[insertion]] we [[/insertion]] 1st [[strikethrough]] coming to our [[/strikethrough]] saw them. God be in their thoughts. & [[strikethrough]] in [[/strikethrough]][^[[insertion & around [[/insertion]] their every pathway. I know not [[underlined]] how just [[/underlined]] or [[underlined]] unjust [[/underlined]] their cause, but I do know that [[underlined]] human life is now at stake [[/underlined]] & ^[[insertion]] now [[/insertion]] my sympathy & hopes are with these men ^[[insertion]] [[insertion]] who are [[/insertion]] seeking their far off, but [[underlined]] dear native homes [[/underlined]] where [[strikethrough]] with [[/strikethrough]] await them ^[[insertion]] kindly [[/insertion]] [[strikethrough]] dear [[/strikethrough]] ones - as dear ^[[insertion] to them [[/insertion]] [[underlined]] as their ^[[insertion]] [[strikethrough]] are [[/strikethrough]] [[/insertion]] very lives they seek to save! [[/underlined]] [[end page]] [[start page]] This crew ^[[insertion]] of 9 [[/insertion]] kept [["Kingmaite"?]] ^[[insertion]] in a Whale boat [[/insertion]] Saturday night 11 o'clk Aug. 4th [[strikethrough]] arived [[/strikethrough]], arrived on the west side Northumberland Inlet ^[[insertion]] [[strikethrough]] about [[/strikethrough]] near [[Keirmuksoke?]] [[/insertion]] [[strikethrough]] Lat. Sanderson's Course" 64° -20' Monday [[/strikethrough]] [[insertion]] Sunday [[/insertion]] noon - from thence they ^[[insertion]] run [[/insertion]] to the "George Henry" which was at the time continuing "Oo-Kood-leer" Bay Tuesday Aug. 7th[['th with underline and '"' written under underline]] VIIoclkP.M. This done in 2 days & [[strikethrough]] 19 [[/strikethrough]] [[insertion]] 20 [[/insertion]] hours! We left Sanderson's town" west side N.I. Lat 64°-20', 9 o'clk Monday eve July 30th & arrived entrance to [[strikethrough]] oo [[/strikethrough]] ^[[insertion]] Ookoodleen [[/insertion]] Bay where these men came aboard Thursday eve 7 o'clk. Making 7 Days & 22 hours! [[underlined]] The Whale Boat had [[strikethrough]] yet [[/strikethrough]] come from a place 110 miles north of where we [[strikethrough]] st [[/strikethrough]] started from. [[/underlined]] But the difference was: we had a three hundred-ton-ship ^[[insertion]] to preserve, & all the time [[/insertion]] contending against fogs, [[clams?]] & head winds while ^[[insertion]] they of [[strikethrough]]] th [[/strikethrough]] [[/insertion]] the whale Boat, had fine breezes & ran along the coast where it seems they had no fog. The facts are this crew had done finely. May their ^[[insertion]] whole [[/insertion]] voyage be as prosperous as its beginning!
