From what I have seen of this region warrants me in saying that it is utterly impossible to come within the bounds of a straight line in planting poles. We must accommodate ourselves to the country, and take advantage of the best locations, I frankly believe, and in this belief I am sustained by those who have seen the country, that the best interests of the company would be benefitted by running the line as I have stated, viz: through the [[?Pereval]] route.

I am sorry to report that the stock of Indian trading goods landed here, is perfectly useless in this country. I except Black Tobacco, needles and ammunition. The remainder of those goods are of no value whatever to the natives in this region. I enclose with this a list of goods necessary for this country, most if not all can be purchased from the Russian Fur Company. During this year many articles were bought from the Russian Company which were absolutely necessary to carry on the exploration. [[marginalia]] (20) [[/marginalia]]
