Smith the Operator, for the purpose of making a correct chart of the bay and surrounding country.  Also to explore through the mountains for a more available pass for the line.  In this we were successful beyond description, good passes having been found and a splendid chart having been made.  We were still prosecuting our work when tidings came to me of the Company's suspending work.  Upon the receipt of this news I immediately repaired to Unalachleet to superintend the transportation of stores and materials to St. Michaels.

Ever since my appointment to the command of this Division it has been my object and intention to act towards the Company as if it were a personal matter and looking at it in that light I determined to select a few good men from my command and by increasing their wages secure them for the Company's service until the completion of the line.
