He had transplanted 2 groups of semi- free- ranging howlers [[underlined]] (A. caraya) [[/underlined]] from his home in Southern France. Also translocated 2 groups w/in Brazil, all unto B.N.P Shipped 17 howlers to Brazil. First release a problem because he tried to keep the animals in one place. [[male symbol]] get nervous, lose confidence, & tend to disperse. Whole group tried to move. He held them back. [[end page]] [[start page]] He supplemented with food for about a month, biggest problem was animals eating toxic leaves, something wh/ doesn't occur in France. (Temperate leaves require fewer defenses than tropical ones that have numerous toxins). Lost total of 5/17 released semi- free- ranging howlers. Started out using radiotelemetry; Then gave up & spots them from plane. Thinks releasing them in Brasilia NP wasn't the best idea, but RAMitt. suggested it.
