IN HONOR AND IN MEMORY OF JOHN NICHOLAS BROWN

Regent of the Smithsonian Institution since March 14, 1957

Dr. Brown's personal concern for the welfare of the Smithsonian Institution and his valued counsel and devotion to the affairs of the Institution will be missed by his colleagues on the Board and his many friends at the Institution.

His particular interest in cultural activities, by no means limited to the Institution, included special assignments as a Regent. Principal among them were his Chairmanship of the National Armed Forces Museum Advisory Board since 1961 and of the National Portrait Gallery Commission since its inception in 1962.

Dr. Brown expressed great pleasure with his Smithsonian affiliation and was known to have remarked in 1978 that "We are Regents of an Institution which has grown and flourished... to a degree unthought of two decades ago. I am proud to have been in some small way part of this great development."

The Board of Regents

RESOLVED that the members of the Board of Regents express their deep regret at the loss suffered by the Institution because of the death of John Nicholas Brown on October 9, 1979, recalling his splendid contributions to the Smithsonian Institution.
