Arts and Industries Building 

Opened in 1881, the Arts and Industries Building was "the National Museum" until around 1911, and included exhibitions on science, as well as history and art.  Today it is a focus for the exhibition of 19th century Americana, and houses numerous programs of education, publication, research, and program and administrative support.

Since 1967, it is estimated that $5,875,000 has been spent on renovation and restoration.  Included in this amount is approximately $3,500,000 that was used for central air conditioning and restoration of the main exhibition halls in 1974-75, and $950,000 for replacement of about one-half of total roof area in 1978-79.  It is anticipated that about $2.5 million will be needed for continuing repairs and renovation over the next several years, including completion of exterior repairs, and further humidity control and ventilation work.
