Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory

Headquartered in Cambridge, Massachusetts, the Astrophysical Observatory, in a joint venture with the Harvard Observatory known as the Center for Astrophysics, coordinates a comprehensive program of research and studies into the physical nature of celestial bodies, processes, and events. Field research is centered at the Observatory on the summit of Mount Hopkins in Arizona, and is supplemented by a number of satellite tracking stations located around the world. Data are obtained from laboratory experiments, ground-based observations, and spaceborne observations. The Observatory's data collecting efforts are linked by a global communications center in Cambridge. The Observatory also maintains extensive laboratory, library, and computer facilities to support its research.

Since 1967, approximately $2,137,000 has been used to construct several telescope observation and support structures, for power and water supply and distribution, access road development and repair, and other improvements and repairs. The Multiple Mirror Telescope project was funded from other than Construction and Repair appropriations. It is anticipated that around $3.6 million will be needed over the next five years to continue summit development and support.
