Meanwhile preparations were made for a winter trip to Fort Youkon. The Hudson Bay style of Sled was tried but abandoned for the Indian Sled of the Country, as the proper mode of making the former was not understood by any of our party. Mr Pickett not having visited any part of the Country through which the line will pass, and being unacquainted with the languages spoken in those regions, and not being otherwise adapted for purposes of Exploration, will not accompany my party.- The difficulties of transporting provisions for two white men are so great that it would not be advisable to add a third to the number.

Upon the breaking up of ice at Fort Youkon, I shall proceed in Canoes as far as possible, and return in the early fall.
