Sir: 
I have the honor to report as follows,
On the 11th of March 1867 St. Le Barge and I left Nulato with four sleds, fourteen dogs, and four Indians for fort Youkon. Our sleds, and snow shoes, of of the common Indian pattern, proved to be unsuited for so long a trip and inferior in every respect to those in use by the Hudson's Bay Co. at Fort Youkon and elsewhere.
These deficiencies, and the constant fall of snow: from the time of leaving, for eighteen days steadily, delayed our arrival until the 19th of May,
When the River was on the very verge of breaking up. We killed several deer, moose, &c. and sufficient small game to keep us supplied with fresh meat during the entire trip. Eight of our fourteen dogs, succeeded in reaching the Fort. We remained four days at the Fort, and then on account of absolute want of provisions, we went
