went down to the lane to go[[strikethrough]]t[[/strikethrough]] across the brook to open the gate. We found that the water was running over the lane deeper ^[[than]] our boots; so we came back and found that we could go through the water on the road that passes Mr. Bradley's and around through Mr. Sanger's cabbage lot. When we came there I got on the frame of the gate and put the crow-bar in one of the holes in the bar, by which the gate is meant to be lifted, to pry it up; but just as it began to move it burst and floated down the brook almost carrying us with it.

The flood has carried a large block of wood into the pond.
