probably can't get a French passport & should therefore go through Germany & back to Finland. If there was a war, she would be on Germany's side, & I on England's, & Poyo torn between but routing for America. We now are trying to get her to join us here - as (thank heaven) she hadn't already left for Rome. We will all try for French Visa's (I have mine) & then flee Italy. Alas I haven't seen Rome! Only 4 days of Italy have I seen & most of that in Police Stations & consulates.


Sept 1st Fri

Having heard that Italy was definitely a bad spot for us in case of war - & knowing that in 2 days we wouldn't be able to drive our car on the roads - & knowing that "blackouts" were planned every night, & knowing that [[strikethrough]] we [[/strikethrough]] Loya was headed to meet us in Rome via Milan - we rushed to Milan to pick her up - through long black tunnels (with our lights blacked out), & already longing to be in Paris, or some capital where Americans in the same plight were a group being cared for. Climbing the steep Simplon pass [[strikethrough]] in Sep [[/strikethrough]] on Sept 2nd (after a blackout night in Milan where we all met - exhausted - & found out from consulates that we were about 2 days behind in our escape) - Loya controlled her fear of fast driving wonderfully.
