At French border - "vous êtes bête (not to have a visa)" alors le consul est plus bête que vous" (& after driving an hour before [[strikethrough]] he [[/strikethrough]] we found he hadn't given us stamp) we said "alors maintenant vous êtes plus bêtes que Le consul! There was only one road still open from Switz. to Fr. - & [[strikethrough]] we [[/strikethrough]] no [[arrow pointing left]] one could assure us of gas in FRANCE

Sept 2nd

Awoke in Genève & drove toward [[strikethrough]] to [[/strikethrough]] Paris hard & fast till dark - [[strikethrough]] toward Le [[/strikethrough]] because the wonderfully clear headed consul there told us [[strikethrough]] as [[/strikethrough]] that if we didn't want to stay [[strikethrough]] safely [[/strikethrough]] in Europe we should go to France. When people ask him about Switzerland he says this is [[strikethrough]] a [[/strikethrough]] the safest place to be in but no boats leave from Switz. Loya [[strikethrough]] to [[/strikethrough]] - being old - was set on staying in Switzerl. to await outcome of the next few days - whether Italy would fight etc. We, having heard that the French border might close any minute, & benzin be unobtainable - wanted to reach France before it was too late. [[strikethrough]] We [[/strikethrough]] Poyo had to argue with her for 1/2 hour while I packed, as there - was no time to lose.
